CITY OF LIER OPTS FOR 200-LITER STREET WASTE BINS

Nobody likes to see garbage lying around, yet this can be the case in many municipalities, to counter this, city of Lier together with Mooimakers introduced the action plan 'We ❤ Proper Lier'.

Everyone likes to live in a clean city or town. Unfortunately, the streetscape is sometimes marred by litter and trash lying around. A few years ago, the city of Lier, situated in Belgium, together with Mooimakers, started the action plan 'We ❤ Proper Lier'. One of the actions is the development of a street litter bin plan. And for this, we are happy to offer a helping hand with our Pillar 200 liters.

A first step in the City of Lier's street waste bin plan involved removing or relocating street waste bins. Indeed, measurements showed that some bins were not in the right place. They were often empty or actually attracted litter or illegal dumping. In phase two, the City of Lier chose to replace those locations where the traditional 50-liter waste bins were often bulging with our 200-liter Pillar urban waste bin. That means up to 4x more waste can be collected in the same area!

Stark figures

"We were looking for a larger waste bin that doesn't take up additional floor space and fits into the streetscape without standing out. The Pillar meets this need perfectly. On the city vests, around the Grand Place and Zimmer Square, we replaced small waste bins with the large 200-liter Pillar waste bins. The locations of the new bins were chosen strategically so that they are easy to empty and so that residents or tourists can always deposit their waste within a short distance. The result is a more beautiful streetscape and fewer bulging garbage bins," says Ivo Andries, alderman for the city of Lier.

The City of Lier naturally measures the impact of these adjustments. Based on that, it adjusts where necessary. We are happy to share some impressive numbers:

  • The number of street waste bins decreased from 366 to 259, but the total capacity increased from 17,670 liters to 19,255 liters by placing 200-liter bins in high-traffic locations (instead of the standard 50 L or 100 L waste bins).
  • The number of empties and interventions decreased from 2,200 per week to 1,363 per week. This frees up more time to sweep streets and clean up fly-tipping.
  • Litter or illegal dumping decreased from 194.5 tons to 177.1 tons.
  • The number of waste bins that were empty more than half the time and thus created unnecessary workload decreased from 54 to 12. There was a decrease from 54 to 28 in the number of litter bins that were overflowing at least 1 day a week, causing litter everywhere.

Innovative urban waste bin

The Pillar, a 100% Belgian product in stainless steel, sits for 37 cm in the ground. This creates a volume of 200 liters without taking up more surface area above ground. The outer wall features pressed studs. This provides a beautiful design, but also offers additional protection against sticking, stickering, marking and graffiti.

The Pillar urban waste bin is standard gray, but available in a variety of RAL colors. Horrified by cigarette butts lying around? Then, like City of Lier, go for a built-in ashtray. Finally, the city of Lier opts for an additional communication board on the Pillar. With a nice message in the right corporate identity, this way additional awareness is created. "The cooperation with Traflux was very pleasant. They responded smoothly and flexibly to all our questions and made adjustments very quickly if necessary," concluded Alderman Andries with satisfaction.
